Carmelo Anthony surpasses his price tag by $ 2.6 million, proving he’s exactly what LeBron James and the Lakers need in their NBA title hunt

As the Los Angeles Lakers make the necessary adjustments, Carmelo Anthony has quickly become a bright spot. Anthony’s offensive production was a welcoming sight as he brought much needed stability. His solid game has shown him to be worth more than a salary of $ 2.6 million, and he’s exactly what Lebron James and the Lakers need to achieve an NBA title.

In the first three games, nothing should surprise the Lakers.

The front office knew that the recasting of the roster would lead to a period of massive adjustment as the team searches for their identity. Los Angeles showed flashes of promise through the star power play. Meanwhile, the roster has demonstrated the need for more defensive cohesion if there is any hope of a serious NBA title push.

However, the Lakers earned their first victory on Sunday night by fending off a spirited Memphis Grizzlies team. It also quickly became clear that Los Angeles must rely on its veteran presence to guide them forward. In that vein, Carmelo Anthony is already showing why he is exactly what the team need to reach the end goal.

As the Lakers make adjustments early in the season, scoring remains a crucial aspect for the team to find balance.

Unsurprisingly, Anthony has become a bright spot in this area behind his consistent production. The 37-year-old was a significant offensive spark off the bench, averaging 17.7 points on 51.4% of shots from the ground and 66.7% over a 3-point range in the first three games.

Anthony is coming off his best outing in a Laker uniform, posting a team record with 28 points behind 6 of 8 shots from distance in the win over the Grizzlies. He shot the ball phenomenally from a distance of 3 points in every game, hitting 50% or better.

The 10-time All-Star won’t maintain that scorching pace from the depths, but his score, especially his 3-point shot, is a welcoming sight. Last season Los Angeles struggled to score consistently off the bench, as their 3-point shot placed 21st with a 35.4% rate.

Anthony is already proving he’s well worth the veterans’ roughly $ 2.6 million minimum wage this season. Defense isn’t his strong suit, but the Lakers didn’t bring him on board for that. He’s well aware of that, and his steadfast commitment to scoring is what will make all the difference in Los Angeles.

“Scoring in basketball is not easy. We can make it look easy, but it’s not easy, ”Anthony said via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “For me, it’s 19 years of rehearsal. And night and night. Day after day. Each summer. All seasons. I am reaping these benefits right now because of the perseverance I have in my professionalism. What I bring to the game, how I approach the game. And I want to continue. That’s all that matters to me.

The Lakers must remain fully engaged in the process

Anthony is certainly a silver lining, but the Lakers need more than his score to keep moving in the right direction.

Star point guard Russell Westbrook must find his role behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Los Angeles acquired him to fill the void as a playmaker who can take some offensive workloads off the shoulders of his star teammates.

Westbrook shows improved play in every game under his belt. It goes from a high use rate as a first or second offensive option to a drastically reduced role. Westbrook will continue to struggle, especially with turnovers averaging 5.7 per game.

Beyond that, the Lakers must remain engaged in the process as that is the only way to determine if this list will work.
