As the price of international travel reaches frightening new heights, many travelers across the United States are turning to domestic vacations instead of expensive overseas trips in a bid to save more than a few dollars. However, just because you’re traveling the country doesn’t always make it easier or cheaper to book a holiday, with travelers still facing daunting levels of planning and preparation, including calculating whether to whether or not it is cheaper to travel by air or on asphalt.
Luckily for travelers, Kayak now offers a tool on its website that will help potential vacationers determine whether or not it’s cheaper to fly to their destination this summer or drive there. Here’s an overview of Kayak’s Trip Computer feature, including how it works and what else it has to offer for those looking to get away from it all this summer.
New Kayak Trip Calculator – What Travelers Need to Know
While the easing of pandemic-related entry restrictions around the world has given travelers one less task on their pre-travel checklist, the sharp rise in prices for flights and hotel stays hotel in the world means that more than ever, travelers need to pay close attention to budgets and finances before they travel. Fortunately, the travel industry is getting creative with traveler-centric solutions, and Kayak’s new trip calculator is one that could help American travelers save money this summer.
The travel calculator webpage looks like any other travel booking webpage on the internet. enter your origin and your destination, select if it is a one way or a round trip, enter the number of travelers, choose the month of the trip and click on the search icon. However, when generating search results, it not only offers the estimated cost of the flight, but also information about driving between the two destinations – including travel time, distance and total cost – before offering its recommendation on which method to select.
For example, when entering a trip for two travelers between New York and Jacksonville, Florida, the estimated total flight price is $494 ($247 per person) and it has a link to search for flights. For the same car trip, the calculator says the 950-mile trip — with a round-trip drive time of just over 30 hours and 89 gallons of fuel used — will cost $462. Below this information, a driving recommendation is added, highlighting the $32 in savings it will generate.
However, the trip calculator doesn’t stop there – it has everything you need to book the trip on the spot. Beneath travel costs and calculator recommendations, it also provides rental car prices in the traveler’s home location in case they don’t want to wear out their own wheels. It also features hotel deals for the traveler’s destination, as well as the latest restaurant deals and promotions, provided courtesy of restaurant reservation services company OpenTable.
In order to provide the figures for air and road travel estimates, Kayak relies on values generated from searches on the platform in the past. For flights it analyzes the searches done in the Kayak areas in the last 2 years, including direct and indirect connections, while for cars the cost of fuel is updated weekly and an average consumption rate fuel was used. For car rentals, it analyzes searches made in the last 31 days on the site, taking into account the place of origin. Although the numbers are not exact, they are a good estimate for travelers to use.
For those who choose to travel by car, the Trip Calculator also offers a number of handy travel guides designed to make traveling as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. These include:
- The best road trip cars
- Road trip tips
- Best family road trip
- Best couples road trip games
- Best Road Trip Snacks
- road trips with dogs
With the help of these guides and knowing you’re saving a few bucks, the road trip could end up being the highlight of the trip itself.
