The Discover it Miles card welcome bonus is unique because you determine how much you can earn by spending.
As you spend on the card, you’ll earn 1.5 times the miles per dollar spent. So if you spend $1,000 per month or $12,000 per year, you’ll earn 18,000 Discover miles.
However, the real value of this card is that Discover automatically matches all miles earned at the end of the card’s first year of membership.
For example, if you earn 18,000 miles in the first year, Discover will automatically match that amount, giving you an additional 18,000 miles, for a total of 36,000 miles. Those 36,000 miles are worth $360.
This makes the card extremely valuable for someone planning to spend a significant amount of money in the first year of joining the card. You effectively earn 3% on all expenses in the first year.
How to Earn Rewards
The Discover it Miles card has a simple earning structure: cardholders will earn 1.5 times the miles per dollar spent on all purchases. There’s no need to track bonus categories, and earning 1.5 times the miles per dollar on all purchases makes this a solid card to use for non-bonus related expenses.
Cardholders can start earning points as soon as they receive the card.
How to Redeem Rewards
With Discover miles, you can redeem them for several types of rewards, including: travel, cash back, Amazon purchases, or PayPal purchases.
Discover miles are worth 1 cent per point regardless of which redemption you choose, giving consumers flexibility without sacrificing value.
If travel is the preferred way to use your miles, redeeming them for such purchases is simple. Simply log in to your Discover account and you can “clear” your travel purchases for the past 180 days.
While cashback is the easiest way, you can have the funds sent directly to your bank account within three business days.
As with Amazon or PayPal purchases, by linking your Discover it Miles card to your Amazon account, you will be able to use the miles to offset the costs of your purchases at checkout.
The biggest difference between Discover Miles and other reward currencies like Chase the Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards is that Discover miles are not transferable to travel partners. Instead of this setting, Discover Miles can directly erase travel expenses from your Discover statement.
Discover it Miles are a great product for consumers looking for an easy way to earn travel rewards. In addition to simple but effective payouts, the card comes with several features:
the Discover it® Miles is a great travel credit card to keep for the long haul as it charges no foreign transaction fees when swiping abroad and has no annual fees. But note that Discover cards are not widely accepted outside the United States as they operate on the Discover network. Mastercard and Visa cards will probably be more useful when traveling abroad.
In addition, cardholders can take advantage of a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases from the date the account is opened. After the intro APR expires, it will change to a variable, 11.99% – 22.99%.
There are late fee up to $40. However, Discover will waive the first time you pay late as a courtesy.
