Chelsea can afford Declan Rice, even at an absurd price
The Chelsea takeover was completed as the ownership torch passed from Roman Abramovich to Todd Boehly and his consortium. The Blues have new senior management for the first time in 19 years, but if recent reports are to be believed, that doesn’t seem to be changing much when it comes to their transfer strategy. Boehly reportedly gave Marina Granovskaia and Thomas Tuchel around £200m to work this summer. The team has a lot of needs, so they will have to find a way to get creative in the transfer market even with such a large sum.
Fortunately, Granovskaia has a long history of making the most of the money she gave. There are ways to not have to stretch the money given to him, especially given some of the options available to Chelsea this summer. It means the Blues can make two or three luxurious additions without breaking the bank or breaking the loose cap of £200million set by the new owners. After missing out on Monaco’s world-class midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, Chelsea shouldn’t wait for Declan Rice to fall into their lap. Instead, the Blues have to shell out the asking price for the elite defensive midfielder this summer.
Chelsea can still afford Declan Rice if the Blues pursue a transfer this summer
West Ham have set their price to sell their prized asset: £150million. Although this is the Hammers’ position in public, it is believed that they would accept an offer of £80-120m should it fall on David Moyes’ desk. Rice has made it clear to his current club that he will not be signing a contract extension. The England international’s value will plummet over the next 12 months given he only has two years left on his current contract. If there was ever a time for West Ham to cash in – instead of letting it walk for free or at a deeply discounted rate – it’s now.
Rice wants to play Champions League football, it’s as simple as that. Despite the Hammers’ best efforts over the past few years, they were unable to crack the top four in the Premier League or top the Europa League to secure qualification. Chelsea are favorites to eventually land Rice given his links with the reigning Club World Cup winners. Rice came through the Blues academy before eventually being released and joining West Ham. He is also incredibly close to a few Tuchel players, namely his best mate, Mason Mount.
Chelsea need a new midfielder or two, two centre-backs, wing cover and maybe some reinforcements in attack. How can they pull off an eight or nine figure move for Rice this summer while filling all the other holes in the squad? This will require creative resolution to the problems of Granovskaia and Tuchel, but by diving into the loan army and shopping in the free transfer market, the Blues can get their money’s worth in other key areas.
Starting from the back, Chelsea will already add Jules Kounde to their ranks. The Blues are said to be exploring a deal for another centre-back, which would likely be their other big signing. In the loan army, Ethan Ampadu and Levi Colwill will have looks this pre-season. There are a few options on the free agent marketbut Tuchel is unlikely to pursue either option as there have been no links between his club and the players so far.
As for the midfielder, it goes without saying that Rice would be a huge addition. The other open spots are likely to be filled by players currently on the Blues’ payroll. Emerson – who has enjoyed a fantastic season on loan with Lyon – is set to replace Ben Chilwell on the left following the expected departure of Marcos Alonso. Dujon Sterling is looking to build on his strong showing from last pre-season and lock his place on the roster behind Reece James. The open midfield spot, previously occupied by Atletico Madrid loanee Saul, will go to Conor Gallagher. Tuchel has already said that Crystal Palace’s Player of the Year will surely have a place in next year’s squad, which fills a huge void and gives Chelsea a huge boost in the middle of the park.
On the attacking side, Ousmane Dembele is the bettors’ favorite to join the Blues on a free transfer from Barcelona. He will likely replace one of the outgoing wingers. The Frenchman would not only bring his unique and creative skills to a team that needs a game injection, but he would also do a lot to ensure Chelsea have the cash to spend. The forwards are understandably the most expensive group out there, so if the Blues can secure Dembele’s signature, they could potentially jump in with a bid for Rice later on. It will take a lot of players to rise to the challenge, but it’s not crazy to expect Chelsea to achieve it one way or another as they continue to rebuild the team in the picture. by Tuchel.
