Inflation calculator: Appropriations return in omnibus spending bill as Americans brace for recession

Inflation will soar even higher after President Joe Biden signed lawmakers’ Omnibus spending bill this week.

Lawmakers closed the earmarking loophole during President Barrack Obama’s administration. The earmarkings gave lawmakers the ability to fund projects in districts across the United States that had little to do with success or overall American politics..

Petrol prices and supermarkets have been the hardest hit by inflation over the past 12 months, but other items could soon become more expensive.

How Much Has Congress Spent on Appointments?

Americans should be prepared for Congress to spend more than $1.5 trillion on its omnibus spending bill, which will include a ton of money for district projects. Some lawmakers opposed to the earmarkings have even called them “pet projects.”

Some examples of expenses? An urban solar village in Pennsylvania will receive $584,000. A tree census project in Hawaii will cost taxpayers $300,000 and Ukraine $13 billion. Republicans and Democrats are being hammered for including appropriations in the spending bill.

The result will mean greater inflation, but it is unclear how serious the consequences will be.

How will omnibus spending make inflation worse?

US Senator James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, warned his colleagues of increased government spending but would worsen inflation.

“Federal spending is what really drove this inflation that we’re experiencing right now,” he said. “When the Democrats passed their big bill last March, it knocked $2 billion off the economy of federal spending, on an economy that was already growing. This supercharged our economy and led to the high inflation we are experiencing today.

The $1.5 trillion omnibus spending bill includes $20 billion for climate resilience programs, $1.45 billion for border actions and $17.2 billion for child care and early childhood education.
