Norfolk Southern launches industry-leading carbon calculator

The online tool helps customers to accurately consider emissions impact of shipping decisions

ATLANTE, March 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE:NSC) today announced the launch of a next-generation carbon calculator to support customers’ efforts to account, measure and mitigate carbon emissions in their carbon emissions decisions. of supply chain. Rail is the most efficient way to transport goods across the landscape. Every day, Norfolk Southern helps build a low carbon economy. According to the latest CDP report, for an average business, supply chain emissions are 11.4 times higher than operational emissions. With a sample of over 7 million shipments, the online calculator is built on an algorithm that produces results based on real data to strengthen and improve efficiency estimates, giving customers the option to include emissions in their transportation decisions.

Norfolk Southern was the first in the rail industry to create a carbon calculator in 2008. In a cutting-edge approach, this new calculator improves the accuracy of carbon estimates by capturing the entire fuel consumption cycle. Direct locomotive fuel consumption is applied to each car based on weight and distance travelled. Additional fuel considered includes yard and local operations, repositioning of equipment, and fuel expended while handling containers in intermodal operations. The innovative process generates a rail energy efficiency factor for 18 wagon types and 30 freight plus intermodal.

“Technology is the fuel that is accelerating Norfolk Southern’s digital transformation,” said Josh Raglin, Norfolk Southern’s Director of Sustainability. “Over 25% of our customers have set public emission reduction targets, and our new calculator provides the level of assurance customers need to measure and manage supply chain emissions. This tool provides our current and future customers the data needed to understand the sustainable benefits of shipping by rail,” added Raglin.

This next generation calculator was designed for the entire transportation industry. Norfolk Southern worked with logistics partners to ensure that the calculations made between the trucking and rail sectors were accurate. With 57% of all freight considered flexible freight, this calculator focuses on integrating carbon into the shipper’s decision framework to encourage the shipper to choose the most efficient, low-carbon mode of transportation.

Users enter the type of cargo they wish to transport, the weight and the frequency of shipments, then choose from more than 75,000 origins and destinations in the United States off-road and other carbon equivalents.

“Rail is one of the most sustainable transportation solutions,” said Ed Elkins, director of marketing for Norfolk Southern. “Railways carry 45% of the country’s long-distance freight, but produce only 7% of all freight-related emissions. The Second Generation Carbon Calculator is an innovative tool that illustrates the efficiency of rail to help customers achieve their own sustainability goals. »
