The new price of the new headquarters of the FMPD

After some members of the Fort Myers City Council were shocked by the proposed price increase for a new Fort Myers police headquarters, new numbers have emerged.

In September, WINK News told you that the new headquarters would cost more than $70 million. Now that price has been reduced to around $59 million.

The architects proposed to reduce the size of the building. Instead of making changes to the entire old News-Press building, they plan to demolish two spaces and use a storage building.

The main question for many taxpayers is who will pay for this? There could be a possible tax on new projects, or the city of Fort Myers could charge residents a police impact fee.

Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson is still questioning the project. “Well, that’s just a piece of that. I mean, we have to look at the whole project. Is it the best location? Is it the best value for money? And weigh it before you make that final commitment,” Anderson said.

The next step for the city council is to visit the space for themselves. They say the tour will be scheduled after the first of the year.
