VW drops the price of the Tiguan R by $1,000

VOLKSWAGEN has reduced the recommended list price of its Tiguan R by $1,000 to $68,990 plus road charges.

Like the Golf R before it – which was slashed by the same amount earlier this month – the high-performance Tiguan R SUV has fallen victim to the effects of the continued shortage of microprocessors, and like the Golf R will be offered with the top of optional Harmon Kardon audio pack range.

VW says that while the Tiguan R has not yet been affected by the temporary unavailability of the premium audio system, it is aware that such a situation is possible and has adjusted the vehicle’s list price as a precaution.

“The majority of the more than 7,000 expressions of interest and 1,000 deposits made for our new R range so far have been for the Tiguan R,” said Michal Szaniecki, brand manager Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles.

“To keep the lines working, Harmon Kardon is becoming optional on the Tiguan R as it is with the Golf. Harman Kardon Tiguan Rs are still being built, as are versions with the standard eight-high sound system speakers familiar from the rest of the Tiguan range.”

The tweak effectively means the Harmon Kardon sound system becomes a $1,000 option, joining the panoramic sunroof ($2,000) as the only extras available on the highly-specified model.

In addition to 4MOTION all-wheel drive – with R Performance torque vectoring – the new Volkswagen Tiguan R comes with 21-inch Estoril alloy wheels, blue-painted performance brake calipers, adaptive chassis control and of IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights.

Inside, the full feature list includes a 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, satellite navigation and digital radio, 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro (panel digital dashboard), R Nappa leather upholstery with R logo in blue , electric front seat with memory, LED ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, head-up display high, 360 degree camera and semi-autonomous parking.

Mr Szaniecki, Tiguan’s expanded range will not be impacted by semiconductor constraints.

“Because our customers typically select the higher-end variants, semiconductor constraints have particularly affected the R range of the Tiguan 162TSI,” he said.

“Fortunately, the refreshed Tiguan Allspace is coming in May (and) in addition to a third row of seats or the extra storage space this model provides, we’ve made sure the Allspace has extra specs for more only improve the price-per-view premium over the five-seat Tiguan.”

The Golf R hatchback and Tiguan R SUV will launch in Australia in April, with Golf R wagon variants to follow in “May or June”, Volkswagen said.
